As Motorsport.com Italia reports, Jorge Martin saw a dominant run in the Indonesia sprint race unravel into a costly fourth-place finish, handing over the championship lead in the process. The weekend at Mandalika did not begin smoothly for the Spaniard despite the strong pace shown by Aprilia machines, with Raúl Fernández and Marco Bezzecchi clearly ahead during a qualifying session where 'Martinator' managed only fifth on the grid behind Marc Márquez.
When the lights went out, however, chaotic scenes at the first corner reshuffled the pack. Fabio Di Giannantonio, Marc Márquez, Bezzecchi, and Fernández converged into the opening bend, resulting in contact between the VR46 rider and Márquez that triggered a chain reaction wiping out both Aprilia riders. Martin capitalised instantly by diving down the inside to snatch the lead from Márquez, quickly pulling out a one-second advantage over his title rival.
It's a shame to find ourselves outside the inflation limits. Just like I make mistakes, my team makes mistakes sometimes too, and we are here to win and lose together.
Everything changed with five laps remaining. An alert regarding front tyre pressure forced Martin to slow down and wave Márquez through to avoid an eight-second penalty. Rebounding quickly, the #93 was soon within reach again as Martin pushed desperately to reclaim the victory that had slipped from his grasp.
Disaster struck on the final tour. Braking too late and running wide, Martin not only failed to pass Márquez but surrendered further ground to Ai Ogura and Di Giannantonio, sliding off the podium entirely to finish fourth. That drop cost him the top spot in the standings, leaving him 4 points adrift of Márquez.
Reflecting on the race to DAZN, Martin explained the root of the trouble. "There was an error in the pressure management, let's say," he admitted, pointing out the tricky conditions as temperatures dropped and humidity climbed during the afternoon. "It's a shame to find ourselves outside the inflation limits. Just like I make mistakes, my team makes mistakes sometimes too, and we are here to win and lose together."
Despite the setback, Martin managed to salvage points and remained optimistic about his speed ahead of the longer race. "At least 6 points we take home," he said. "We have a good velocity, I think tomorrow is a good opportunity to make a nice race."
