Now, that is how you convert practice speed into a proper, stunning result. According to Motorsport.com, Raul Fernandez delivered a brilliant performance to claim his maiden MotoGP pole position at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Saturday, putting his Trackhouse machine right at the front of the grid with a 1m28.562s lap.
It was not without its drama, of course. Fernandez had to fend off the factory Aprilia of Marco Bezzecchi, who looked well on his way to responding until a late crash for Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer at Turn 16 triggered yellow flags and forced him to abandon his final flying lap. Bezzecchi had set the early benchmark with a 1m28.961s in the opening runs, but Fernandez found an extra tenth on fresh soft tyres to snatch pole, delivering Trackhouse’s first pole since Ai Ogura topped the Czech GP in June. VR46 rider Fabio di Giannantonio rounded out the front row in third place.
Further back, the battle for the championship served up some proper tactical intrigue. Reigning champion Marc Marquez shadowed title leader Jorge Martin on track in a game of cat-and-mouse that even prompted Aprilia to warn Martin via his dashboard. Even after Martin tried to back off and regroup, Marquez stuck right with him. When the dust settled, the factory Ducati of Marquez went 0.034s quicker to lock down fourth on the grid, pushing championship leader Martin down to fifth.
Aldeguer held on to sixth despite his late tumble, while Trackhouse teammate Ogura pulled off an incredible recovery to seventh after breaking a finger on Friday and crashing again during Q1. Alex Marquez wound up eighth, followed by Pedro Acosta and Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia to round out the top 10. Franco Morbidelli took 11th for VR46, with Fabio Quartararo ending up 12th on the lead Yamaha.
Earlier in the day, Q1 lived up to its chaotic reputation as a proper crash fest with five riders hitting the deck: Ogura, Enea Bastianini, Jack Miller, Diogo Moreira, and Johann Zarco. Bastianini's late fall proved costly, leaving him 14th behind factory Yamaha rider Alex Rins. Behind them came Luca Marini as the top Honda, Brad Binder for factory KTM, and Miller in 17th for Pramac. Maverick Vinales steered clear of trouble to take 18th, just ahead of Pramac’s Toprak Razgatlioglu, who gritted his teeth to take part after dislocating his right shoulder in a nasty highside during Saturday morning practice. LCR endured a miserable session with Zarco and Moreira both falling again to lock out the final row alongside Honda test rider Aleix Espargaro, who stepped in to substitute for Joan Mir.
