That is an absolute heartbreak for George Russell. After snatching the lead of the Sprint from Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, the Mercedes driver crashed out of the event at the Marina Bay Circuit.
Starting from P2, Russell made a fantastic launch to pass Verstappen and handled the tough conditions well after heavy rain made parts of the circuit tricky. But coming around the final corner, he dipped his right rear wheel onto the painted white line, spinning into the pit wall before bouncing back across the track to an abrupt halt.
We saw some good things last night and hopefully we can improve some things and extract the potential out of the package,
"I just misjudged it, to be honest," Russell reflected. "I came round the corner, I came on the throttle, I got more power than I was expecting from the battery. I went a little bit wide and then I touched the white line. The number one rule in the rain is don't touch the white line. It's a very silly mistake - overly confident. I think it's my first crash of the year. It's annoying to happen from that position."
It was a chaotic affair out there, with a further eight drivers retiring from the event, including McLaren driver Oscar Piastri after he collided with his team mate Lando Norris. For Russell, who is running an older specification of the W17 to provide a direct comparison to Kimi Antonelli's upgraded car, an incoming grid penalty for Sunday's race made the error sting that much more.

Mercedes Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord remained pragmatic about the damage and Sunday's prospects. "There's never been a Qualifying session we less need him to compete in, so if [the car] can't be fixed, that's okay because we know where he's starting tomorrow regardless," Lord explained. The team planned to swap the rear end and right front corner, hoping the floor escaped heavy damage.
Meanwhile, Antonelli turned a starting position of P7 into a P4 finish at the chequered flag, taking advantage of others' misfortune while Mercedes continues gathering data on the upgrade package introduced in Malaysia. "We saw some good things last night and hopefully we can improve some things and extract the potential out of the package," Antonelli said regarding the narrow operating window.
With Russell already facing a back-of-the-grid start for the Singapore Grand Prix, the Sprint was his golden opportunity at the front. Now, it is all about repair work and damage limitation for Sunday.
