Here's the thing about the penultimate round of the NASCAR Cup Series season: it brings us right to Martinsville Speedway for the Xfinity 500, serving as the ninth of 10 races encompassing The Chase presented by Mobil 1 and the 35th points-paying event of the campaign. Sunday's race gets underway at 2 p.m. ET, with television coverage on NBC and HBO Max, alongside radio broadcasts on MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. William Byron arrives as the defending Martinsville fall victor.
Now, Kyle Larson enters this short-track showdown holding a massive 73-point advantage in The Chase standings after taking the victory at Talladega Superspeedway. The No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports pilot, who is the defending Cup Series champion, has his sights set firmly on clinching his third career Cup Series title right here at "The Paperclip." With strong historical numbers at the venue — including a victory back in 2023 — the machine from Hendrick Motorsports is in a prime position to wrap things up.
That said, the road to the title has already narrowed significantly for a large portion of the field. Nine Cup Series Chasers have been officially eliminated from championship contention ahead of the trip to Martinsville: Austin Cindric, Ty Gibbs, Carson Hocevar, Byron, Chase Elliott, Bubba Wallace, Daniel Suárez, Ryan Preece, and Chris Buescher.

When the garage opens for Sunday's action, a total of 37 race cars will be entered into the event. It is a massive grid ready to tackle the tight, frantic confines of the historic short track as the championship fight reaches its absolute boiling point.
