Now, here's an interesting strategy from Woking. As Motorsport.com reports, McLaren is banking on a phased upgrade plan designed to achieve a dual objective: narrow the deficit to the front-running cars and simultaneously evaluate which aerodynamic direction the team should pursue for next season's Formula 1 machinery.
Following the race in Singapore, team principal Andrea Stella outlined the squad's approach. Meanwhile, reigning champion Lando Norris offered a blunt assessment of the papaya machinery, stating that he felt it was only the fourth-fastest car on the grid. Norris went as far as describing the weekend as "just full on and mentally draining because of how hard you have to work behind the wheel."
Stella admitted he was not surprised by the recent lack of performance, pointing to rival Red Bull's successful introduction of car upgrades. Stella described the current F1 landscape as a "ping-pong" dynamic where teams leapfrog each other with new parts. He noted that Red Bull held an advantage of three tenths of a second over them in Singapore, pointing out that "three tenths of a second is a range that you can add with an upgrade."
Looking ahead, Stella confirmed that new parts are indeed on the way. "We do plan to deliver some upgrades," he stated, expressing hope that the developments will bridge the gap to the front-runners and put McLaren in contention for podiums on merit. Whether those parts can unlock race victories might not become clear until the final three rounds, given that the components will arrive in stages.
There is more at stake here than just the immediate championship battle. Stella explained that the team needs to track-test fundamental aerodynamic concepts that will carry over into next year's car. After two years of development since January 2, 2025, the aerodynamic limits have grown increasingly complex. By testing these ideas now, the team hopes to verify what works before committing to next season's design.
All of this comes as McLaren remains locked in a tight battle for championship position, currently running level on points with Red Bull while also setting its sights on Ferrari.
