Here's the thing about racing around a tight circuit: when everyone says overtaking is nearly impossible, someone usually has to prove them wrong. Taito Kato did precisely that during the Sprint Race at the Madring circuit, turning a difficult P12 grid slot into a hard-fought points finish.
The ART Grand Prix machine looked hooked up when it mattered. The Honda Formula Dream Project driver carved his way forward, pulling off a move that deserves proper respect. On Lap 12 or 13, taking advantage of a rival running without DRS, he went side-by-side into Turn 5 against MP Motorsport's Tuukka Taponen and simply out-braked him to claim P10. That brilliant piece of racecraft, combined with a 10-second time penalty for Enzo Delingy, sealed a valuable points haul.
Reflecting on the scrap, Kato pointed out just how brutal the track layout is for anyone trying to make progress. "I think it was really great. Overall, really difficult to overtake here and I think you saw that in the race," Kato said, highlighting the scarcity of passing zones even with DRS deployed. "I had good top speed, I could go side-by-side into T5 and then brake later to move in front. But it was really tough to be honest. But happy to finally have gained the position."
Far from just a frantic dash for points, the Sprint Race served as vital preparation for the bigger tests ahead. Kato and the ART Grand Prix squad gathered crucial data on tyre degradation and gap management ahead of Saturday evening and Sunday morning's Feature Races. Crucially, the grid positions are vastly different for the upcoming battles, with the Japanese driver set to start P1 in one Feature Race and P4 in the other.
Carrying momentum forward from a mighty weekend at Monza—though one where he missed out on the top step—the target is crystal clear. Armed with strong car performance and data gathered from the Sprint, the young racer is setting his sights firmly on the ultimate prize. "For sure we can get another win. We have a really good mindset from the Monza. Obviously, it was a mighty weekend in Monza. But still, I couldn't win the Feature Race. So I think this time the target is to win in the Feature," Kato stated, while also keeping one eye on a late championship charge to leap up to third in the Drivers' Championship.
