That is how you answer a brutal slump. As Motorsport.com reports, Tyler Reddick walked into the post-race press conference with a grin and a simple "bet you weren’t expecting me," and frankly, it is hard to argue with him.
For all the speed the 23XI Racing No. 45 machine showed at the beginning of the year, things went completely sideways over a catastrophic second half. A brutal six-month winless drought finally ended on Sunday with their sixth victory of the season at Phoenix, delivering a maiden win for partner Rockstar in the process.
Sunday's victory wasn't born from a flawless afternoon. Early on, crew chief Billy Scott called for right sides only on their first stop, and the car went backwards through the field. But when the decisive two-tire stop arrived, Reddick trusted his pit wall, nailed the restart, and capitalized as rival drivers and teams hit trouble.
"Billy stuck to what he knew was best, and we executed that at the end," Reddick said after climbing the catchfence to celebrate with the crowd in Phoenix.
More importantly, this result blows the championship wide open. A disastrous day for leaders Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin, combined with Reddick's charge to the front, slashed the points gap from 114 down to 56. With three races remaining at Talladega, Martinsville, and Homestead-Miami, and a maximum points haul sitting at 76, a title that looked entirely out of reach just weeks ago is suddenly back on the table.
Reddick admits short tracks have not been their historical strong suit, but conquering Phoenix offers real momentum heading to Martinsville. It has been a wild, painful summer for the 23XI Racing camp, but when you find a way back to victory lane, all of that disappears in a cloud of tyre smoke.
