Listen, when a machine is dialed in, you just sit back and watch it work. Toyota put on an absolute masterclass at the inaugural 6 Hours of Barcelona presented by Visit Qatar, locking out the top two spots and officially wrapping up the 2026 FIA Hypercar World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship in style. After two completely dry days at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, race day threw a curveball with a wet track that immediately bit back at the field.
Pole-sitter André Lotterer found himself swallowed up on the run to Turn One by Genesis Magma Racing stablemate Daniel Juncadella and TOYOTA RACING star Sébastien Buemi (yes, that Sébastien Buemi). Then things got properly wild when the #19 Genesis went off into the Turn Five gravel trap, tumbling from the lead straight to the tail-end of the Hypercar pack. That handed the keys to Buemi in the #8 Toyota, and outside of a five-second penalty for a start procedure infringement, the championship leaders never looked back.
It wasn't long before the sister car joined the party at the front. Shortly into the second hour, a hard-charging Nyck de Vries sliced past Ferrari’s Miguel Molina to cement a Toyota one-two, and the pair of TR010 Hybrid beasts simply checked out from the chasing pack. Stints rotated through Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa in the #8, alongside Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi in the #7, before both Toyotas flashed across the finish line together in a formation finish.
This stunning display didn't just net the marque its first one-two of the year; it also secured their eighth manufacturers' title in 14 seasons, and their fifth out of six in the Hypercar era. Remarkably, the TR010 Hybrid followed right in the footsteps of its TS040 Hybrid and GR010 Hybrid predecessors by taking the crown in its very first campaign. For Buemi, celebrating in his milestone 100th FIA WEC appearance, the result felt extra sweet: "It’s amazing that the team has managed to fight back after a very difficult 2025," he said. Team Principal Kamui Kobayashi added, "I think we have made a huge step this year... now, we have to enjoy the last race, when we will have no team orders, so I think we can look forward to a big fight!"
Further down the order, the #50 Ferrari 499P of Miguel Molina, Antonio Fuoco and Nicklas Nielsen picked up a clean third place to round out the podium. But it was sheer disaster for the sister #51 trio of Antonio Giovinazzi, James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi, whose Drivers’ title defence officially breathed its last after a string of troubles dumped them 15th and three laps down at the flag. Meanwhile, an offset strategy worked wonders for the #38 Cadillac as Jack Aitken, Earl Bamber and Sébastien Bourdais held off the #83 AF Corse Ferrari driven by Robert Kubica, Phil Hanson and Yifei Ye for fifth, with the #12 Cadillac slotting into sixth.
It was another brutal Sunday for BMW out on track, as seventh for the #15 M Hybrid V8 and a third straight non-score for the #20 machine—which briefly ran second before getting slapped with a penalty for a tyre pressure infraction—leaves only the two Toyota crews standing to fight for the Drivers’ trophy in three weeks. Genesis also endured a harsh reality check, tumbling out of the points altogether after a cascade of errors and issues.
The 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship now barrels toward its grand finale at the 6 Hours of Monza on 6-8 November.
