Two-time MOTUL FIM Superbike World Champion Alvaro Bautista arrives at the final two rounds of the 2026 season facing an entirely open future without a confirmed seat for the upcoming campaign. The #19 is looking to replicate his strong finish from 2025, where he secured eight podiums from the final eight races to clinch third place in the Riders' Championship battle, hoping to use a late-season push to raise his stock.
Following that impressive close to 2025, Bautista made the switch from the factory Aruba.it Racing – Ducati outfit to the Barni Ducati squad. Aside from a promising start featuring a wet Race 2 podium at Phillip Island, the Spanish rider has battled for consistency and struggled to replicate those previous heights. With only that single rostrum result to his name so far, he is currently on pace to record his worst top-three tally since his sophomore WorldSBK season in 2020.

Adding to the challenge, the Barni Ducati team announced shortly after Round 10 at Cremona that Xavi Vierge (Pata Maxus Yamaha) will take over Bautista's machine in 2027 to ride alongside Yari Montella. This development means the veteran rider must look elsewhere on the grid for the upcoming campaign.
Looking ahead to the racing at Estoril, Bautista opened up about his current mindset regarding his career progression. “At the moment, I don’t have any clear proposals that motivate me to keep racing,” Bautista said. “I want to finish out this season, then have a break and think about my future. I don’t want to do something just because I have to. I want something that motivates me and makes me feel like I have a chance to recover my form and performance level. Right now, I’m not concerned about that. I just want to end this season as soon as possible. I’ve had good results in the past at Estoril, but Jerez is my home round. I’d like to enjoy these two rounds, then think about the future.”
With grid slots filling up rapidly as the 2026 rider market moves along, Bautista has a significant task ahead to secure a competitive garage for the next iteration of WorldSBK.
