That is how you build a racing season: the 2026 FIM Yamaha R3 bLU cRU World Cup arrives at the Circuito Estoril this weekend with a razor-thin single point splitting the two title protagonists at the very top of the standings.
Now, the Dominican Republic's Xarly Mendez held the championship advantage from the opening round. But Japanese ace Riichi Takahira went and hunted him down. Three victories from the last four races—culminating in a decisive Race 2 win last time out at Cremona—pushed Takahira to the summit of the standings. That leaves him sitting exactly one point ahead of Mendez as the paddock rolls into Portugal.
Mathematically speaking, the championship door remains wide open for the top seven riders in the field. Italy's Emanuele Pastore holds third position overall, sitting 31 points adrift of Takahira's benchmark. Right behind him is Brazil's Aymon Bocanegra, facing a 35-point deficit to the lead. Meanwhile, Mottola, Clark, and Binder are also technically in the hunt with a maximum of 50 points still on offer this weekend.
History adds an extra layer of intrigue to the paddock. Bocanegra tasted victory in Portugal last year during the second race, while Mendez knows this venue well after claiming a Race 1 podium finish here 12 months ago. For Takahira, Circuito Estoril is an entirely new circuit to master, though adapting quickly to unfamiliar tracks has been a defining strength of his campaign.
The action kicks off on Friday with Practice and Superpole sessions. That paves the way for the high-stakes battles ahead, with Race 1 on Saturday and Race 2 on Sunday both scheduled to go green at 13:00 local time.
