An extraordinary legal battle has landed in London's High Court, where Williams Racing is taking a local garage owner to task over a missing piece of Formula 1 history. According to Motorsport.com, the Grove-based squad has launched legal action demanding either the return of a rare 2001 Williams FW23 chassis or financial compensation exceeding £1million.
That specific chassis carries serious pedigree. During the 2001 campaign, Ralf Schumacher took three victories in the FW23, while his team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya claimed his very first career grand prix win in the same machinery. Williams internally values the iconic chassis at roughly £750,000, and originally loaned the vehicle to Autotech Performance Ltd back in 2015 so the Telford-based garage could display it for commercial and promotional purposes.
Everything fell apart when Autotech liquidated its assets in the summer of 2021. When Williams tried to get its property back, the car had vanished. Legal filings allege that former Autotech director Peter Thorpe improperly took control of the chassis by telling liquidation evaluators that he owned it personally, removing it from the property before the team could step in. Now, Williams wants the FW23 back or a payout exceeding £1million to cover the loss and daily rental fees.
Peter Thorpe and his legal team are fighting back with a startling defence. Thorpe insists he never claimed ownership of the car and has no idea where it went after August 2021. To explain the missing timeline, his lawyers revealed he suffered a debilitating stroke in October 2018, which led to severe cognitive impairment and persistent memory issues.
On top of that, the defence is trying to tear down the team's £750,000 valuation. Thorpe's lawyers argue the missing chassis was merely an empty display shell without a functional engine, making it far less valuable than a genuine grand prix machine. A Williams spokesperson declined to comment on the active litigation, stating only that the team is trusting the British legal system to resolve the mystery.
