Mercedes arrives at Singapore looking for answers after a difficult Malaysian Grand Prix that failed to match expectations. As FormulaUno.it reports, the team has spent the days since Sepang digging through data to understand why their performance fell short, putting their recent updates under the microscope.
To get clear answers, the squad is executing a direct comparison between their latest upgrade package and the previous specification of the W17. As Kimi Antonelli previously hinted, and as the current program indicates, the two drivers will run different specifications throughout the entire weekend. This split approach is designed to harvest maximum data not just from practice, but across both qualifying sessions and both races, aiding both the end of this season and the 2027 development path.
Complicating matters further is a heavy setback for George Russell. A power unit failure in Malaysia forces the British driver to start Sunday's race from the back of the reserve grid. Toto Wolff called it particularly frustrating given how strongly Russell drove last time out, leaving the team focused on giving him a machine capable of mounting a recovery.
Reflecting on the wider challenge, Toto Wolff described the weekend as a technical, sporting, and character test for the outfit based in Brackley. The team boss noted that while several areas requiring deeper analysis have been identified, Formula 1 rarely hands out simple answers.

Looking ahead to the event, reserve driver Frederick Vesti highlighted the intense demands of the venue, noting that the track makes a driver feel truly alive and requires absolute concentration between the walls, much like Monaco and Baku. Vesti also recalled George Russell's victory at Singapore in 2025 as one of the highlights of that season, underlining the immense difficulty of mastering the circuit.
Beyond the technical evaluation and the mental strain, the physical toll of the heat, humidity, and potential Safety Car periods turns the event into a true test of endurance. Wolff emphasized that the goal is to maximize the final Sprint weekend of the year, keep learning, and extract the best possible result from both machines.
