Chris Bosh to wave green flag for Lone Star Le Mans

Here is something you do not see every day in the world of endurance racing. Former basketball hero Chris Bosh is stepping away from the hardwood and heading to Austin’s in Texas, where he will wave the green flag to signal the start of this weekend’s Lone Star Le Mans. It is round five of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship campaign, and it is getting a proper star treatment.

Now, Bosh is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation. He played in the National Basketball Association for the Toronto Raptors and subsequently the Miami Heat, where he formed the famous ‘Big Three’ alongside LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. The Dallas-born star won two NBA titles with Miami in 2012 and 2013, and was selected to compete in the league's annual All-Star exhibition game on no fewer than 11 occasions between 2006 and 2016.

Over the course of his illustrious career in the sport, Bosh also won a gold medal for the USA Men’s National Team—nicknamed the ‘Redeem Team’—in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He was later inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.

Thankfully, the Texan is a huge motorsport fan. In addition to his role as official starter of the six-hour contest, he will also take part in the pre-race ‘Lap of Honour’ in a McLaren. Not a bad way to experience the circuit.

Lone Star Le Mans will get underway at 13:00 local time (GMT-5) on Sunday, 6 September.
