Here is the thing about racing: people love to talk about fortune when a young driver hits a streak, but as Motorsport.com reports, former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard is having none of that nonsense. He has firmly branded championship leader Kimi Antonelli a "phenomenon" and completely rejected any notion that luck is driving the Italian's success.
Now, Antonelli is currently tackling his second season in the series, and his momentum has been relentless. He grabbed the lead of the drivers' standings following consecutive victories at the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix. Across the first half of the season, he racked up six grand prix wins in total, and he recently added his eighth victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.
That Madrid win did feature a well-timed virtual safety car, a fact Antonelli himself admitted helped his cause. But speaking on an episode of the Up To Speed podcast, the former Red Bull driver pointed out the deeper reality of the situation. "Some people say you make your own luck. He has found a sweet spot in his second year of Formula 1 with this particular set of rules and regulations," he explained.
The backing from Mercedes has clearly played its part for the serial winners. Yet Coulthard highlighted the raw racecraft involved, noting how the young Italian continues to take risks while somehow maintaining the spatial awareness to avoid losing an end plate or ripping a corner off when brushing the wall in Turn 7. The stopwatch simply does not lie in a data-driven world, consistently clocking him quicker than most while he regularly sees the chequered flag.
"Yeah, call him lucky. I call him a phenomenon. And unless he gets very unlucky, he is going to be the 2026 Formula 1 world champion," Coulthard stated.
The numbers certainly back up that bold prediction. Antonelli currently holds an 81-point advantage over his team-mate George Russell, who sits second in the standings. Meanwhile, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton follows in third place, sitting 101 points behind the championship leader.
Attention now turns to the 15th round of the season, with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix scheduled to take place from 24-26 September.
