Here’s the thing about the 2026 MotoGP season: it has delivered drama by the bucketload. Now, with seventeen rounds in the books, just two points separate the top two in the World Championship.
Jorge Martin, riding for Aprilia Racing, leads none other than Marc Marquez of the Ducati Lenovo Team. That razor-thin two-point gap matches a record set four seasons ago. Back in 2022, Fabio Quartararo of the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP squad led Francesco Bagnaia of the Ducati Lenovo Team by the exact same margin after the seventeenth round, which was the Thai GP. That particular battle went all the way to the final round at Valencia, where Bagnaia emerged as the eventual World Champion to secure his first of two MotoGP titles.
Looking at how we got here makes it even wilder. Martin has collected nine podiums, four pole positions, and a victory at the French GP. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez has put together a stunning run since returning from injury at the Italian GP. The #93 has clinched six victories, three pole positions, and clawed back an astonishing 102-point deficit down to just two.
If Marquez actually pulls off the championship from here, it will officially become the largest comeback in MotoGP history. He would beat the previous record, which was also set in 2022 when Bagnaia overturned a 91-point deficit following the German GP.
Thankfully, we have a blockbuster end to the season ahead of us. There are five rounds left to decide the World Championship, starting right away at Phillip Island. From Australia, the calendar takes the field to Malaysia and then Qatar, before heading back to Europe where Portugal and Valencia will host the final stretch.
