Here's the thing about power unit limits: eventually, the bill always comes due. Mercedes driver George Russell is about to pay it once more, taking a five-place grid penalty at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after the team fitted a fresh Internal Combustion Engine to his machine. This marks the second time in the last four rounds that the Briton has been forced to take an engine penalty.
It is far from an unfamiliar position for the squad. Russell already had to serve a significant penalty at the Singapore Grand Prix following a wave of unavoidable power unit component changes. That earlier setback came right on the heels of a painful retirement caused by a power unit failure at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Five places doesn’t seem that bad, and we’ll try and come back through,
Knowing another penalty was inevitable before the season closed out, the team and driver deliberately circled Interlagos as the battleground for the drop. "We felt like this was a good place to take it," Russell explained in an Instagram Stories post shared by the team. Looking at the history books, the logic is sound enough. He explicitly pointed to Lewis Hamilton, noting that Hamilton took a big grid penalty at this very venue in the past and managed to pull off a stunning charge.

That historical precedent is hard to ignore. Hamilton suffered a disqualification from Sprint Qualifying in Brazil back in 2021, which dumped him to the back of the grid for the Sprint itself. He clawed his way up to fifth before famously winning Sunday’s Grand Prix from 10th after taking another penalty. Compared to those kinds of mountains, a neat five-place drop feels almost manageable. "Five places doesn’t seem that bad, and we’ll try and come back through," Russell said.
This latest engine change also arrives on the heels of a genuinely bruising weekend in Mexico. Team Principal Toto Wolff admitted that the 28-year-old was left absolutely "distraught" by the outcome of that race. Now, the machine needs fresh hardware, the penalty is locked in, and Russell has a recovery drive on his hands.
