Things have simply not gone to plan for Justin Allgaier in the 2026 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Chase. After enduring four consecutive postseason disasters, the driver of the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet arrives at Charlotte Motor Speedway needing a serious shift in momentum during Saturday’s Blue Cross NC 300.
Allgaier once sat comfortably atop the standings when the Chase kicked off at Darlington Raceway, but a string of bad luck has dragged him down to fourth place. He now trails series leader Sheldon Creed by 30 points with only five races remaining in the season. Even so, the veteran driver brings a unique pedigree to the 1.5-mile track as the only former Charlotte oval winner in Saturday's field. History also suggests anything can happen, given that the last 14 races at the venue have delivered 14 different winners.
We learned some things last week in Las Vegas that we will implement in Charlotte and go from there. I think we’re struggling with some things that, if we fix for Charlotte, we’ll be in good shape.
“Charlotte has been a really strong track for us over the last few years, but all of those races were in the heat of May, so it will be interesting to see how this weekend plays out,” Allgaier remarked ahead of the weekend. “I know that everyone on this team is ready to get there. Our Chase hasn’t started quite like we hoped, but this group is ready to go out there and do what we’ve done all year. There is still a lot of racing left to be done, and I feel like Charlotte is a great place to get that momentum back on our side.”
Allgaier’s recent misfortunes have directly benefited his rivals near the top of the points table. Carson Kvapil capitalized at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to climb into second place, sitting 19 points behind Creed. Right behind him in third is Jesse Love, the defending series champion, who trails the leader by 21 points after finishing third last weekend behind race winner Corey Day and runner-up Kvapil.
Love heads into Saturday feeling confident that his team's package suits the Charlotte asphalt. “We were really good here in the spring,” said Love, recalling a rain-shortened May outing where he finished second behind full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver Ross Chastain. “We learned some things last week in Las Vegas that we will implement in Charlotte and go from there. I think we’re struggling with some things that, if we fix for Charlotte, we’ll be in good shape.”
With the top six drivers all staying within striking distance of the lead, the championship battle remains wide open. Sixth-place Sam Mayer has quietly climbed four positions since the Chase began, currently sitting 52 points adrift of Creed as the series prepares for Saturday's showdown.
