Here is the news nobody wanted to read: Toprak Razgatlioglu's 2026 MotoGP season is over before it could truly catch fire. After traveling to Milan on Monday, October 19, for further medical examinations, it was confirmed that the shoulder injury he suffered in a violent highside crash during the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika is severe enough to demand surgical intervention.
In agreement with the Turkish rider, the operation is locked in for Monday, October 26, in Milan. That means the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island and all remaining rounds of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship are officially off the table as he pivots entirely to rehabilitation. It is a bitter pill for a machine and a rider pairing still finding their feet in the premier class.
I‘m extremely disappointed to miss the Australian Grand Prix,
Stepping into the breach will be Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez, who is planned to take over for Razgatlıoğlu at Phillip Island and for the subsequent races until the regular rider is ready to return. Both Yamaha and Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP have expressed their gratitude to Fernandez while throwing their full weight behind Razgatlioglu's recovery.
Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP Team Director Gino Borsoi laid out the reality of the situation clearly. "We are very sorry for Toprak, as we know how much he wanted to race at Phillip Island and continue his journey with the YZR-M1," Borsoi said, emphasizing that health must take priority while welcoming the familiarity that Yamaha's test rider brings to the garage for the upcoming events.
For the rider himself, the blow lands heavily, especially given the venue. "I‘m extremely disappointed to miss the Australian Grand Prix," Razgatlioglu admitted. "Phillip Island is one of my favourite circuits and a place where I‘ve enjoyed some very special moments during my Superbike career. I was excited about the opportunity to race here on the MotoGP bike, which makes this situation even harder to accept."
After consulting with doctors and his inner circle, the decision to go under the knife became the only logical path to guarantee a return to full fitness. Before signing off, Razgatlioglu spared a thought for his teammate, offering well wishes to Jack for his home Grand Prix at what he noted is the final MotoGP event at Phillip Island. From afar, the sidelined star will be watching and cheering.
