MotoGP has landed at Phillip Island, the home of surprises, final lap scraps, and pure drama. With excitement building and just two points separating Martin and Marc Marquez as the series heads Down Under, it is the perfect time to look back at some of the most unforgettable moments this historic venue has ever produced.
In 2003, Valentino Rossi started from pole on a day that would turn entirely wild. After Marco Melandri took an early lead before tangling with Troy Bayliss, Rossi found himself at the front. The race was then turned on its head when the #46 received a 10-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags. Rossi put the hammer down and delivered an astonishing performance, stretching his margin to 15.212s at the flag to make his official winning margin 5.212s over Loris Capirossi and Nicky Hayden.
The following year, the trip to Phillip Island brought another chapter of the legendary duel between Valentino Rossi and Sete Gibernau. The pair locked horns from lights out and stormed into the distance, battling all the way to the final lap. Rossi snatched victory from Gibernau by just 0.097s on the run to the flag, a win that crowned him the 2004 MotoGP World Champion and completed the first chapter of his remarkable switch to Yamaha.
Drama defined the 2013 Australian GP, featuring a mandatory bike swap implemented for safety reasons. Jorge Lorenzo launched from pole and took the lead on the opening laps, but the pivotal moment arrived during the pit stops. Marc Marquez stayed out until the end of Lap 11, which was outside the allowed window. That oversight earned the #93 a black flag and disqualification, allowing Lorenzo to storm to victory ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi.
The 2015 race delivered an all-time classic Down Under with multiple manufacturers fighting for glory. Marc Marquez started from pole, but Andrea Iannone immediately stole the advantage early on board the Ducati. Lorenzo, Marquez, and Valentino Rossi all took turns at the front before Lorenzo led onto the final lap. Marquez then pulled off a spectacular move at Lukey Heights to steal the victory, with Lorenzo taking second and Iannone third.
More recently in 2022, the visit came right as tension peaked with just a handful of points separating Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo in the World Championship. Jorge Martin led the opening laps until Quartararo crashed out on Lap 11. Alex Rins, Bagnaia, and Marc Marquez then engaged in a fierce battle for glory in true Australian GP fashion, with Rins holding firm to charge to victory over Marquez and Bagnaia.
