That new machine from Sant'Agata Bolognese nearly pulled off the impossible. As Motorsport.com Italia reports, the Lamborghini Temerario GT3 capped off its 2026 IMSA SportsCar Championship campaign by taking second place in the GTD PRO standings, fighting for the crown right down to the final moments of a brutal Petit Le Mans.
Running in its iconic plaid livery and managed by Pfaff Motorsports, the #9 Temerario even led the race early on and stayed firmly in the mix despite a staggering 16 neutralisations at Road Atlanta. Andrea Caldarelli, Sandy Mitchell, and Franck Perera pushed the beast hard, but under the checkered flag, victory slipped away by a microscopic 0"266 margin behind their direct title rivals, the #1 BMW-Paul Miller Racing entry. It was a heartbreaking end to an otherwise astonishing run.
From their tough beginnings at Sebring in March, the Pfaff squad—competing in their outgoing and final racing appearance for now—clawed their way forward. They secured Endurance Cup glory at Road America, a Sprint Cup win at Virginia International Raceway, and a gritty third place at Indianapolis. Andrea Reggiani, Head of Motorsport at Lamborghini, called finishing second with a debut car an incredible result given the early-season struggles, praising the relentless development from everyone at Lamborghini Squadra Corse and the flawless execution by Steve Bortolotti's Pfaff team.
Caldarelli, who drove the car in its very first test a year prior, admitted he never thought a title fight was possible at the start of the program. Mitchell echoed that sentiment, noting that the team's progression through the latter half of the season surpassed all expectations as they racked up three podiums, including two wins, across their final four races before Braselton.
Meanwhile, the celebrations extended across the Atlantic. Over in Barcelona for the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup finale, VSR unleashed their own Temerario to devastating effect. In Sunday afternoon's Race 2 at Montmelò, the #163 machine driven by Mattia Michelotto and Loris Spinelli grabbed Gold Cup victory and an incredible fourth place overall.
Michelotto started strong before handing over to Spinelli, who fended off the lightning-fast Mercedes cars of Lucas Auer and Daniel Juncadella to slam the door shut. Spinelli was ecstatic after the finish, hailing the relentless hard work that finally paid off with a category win and stellar overall pace, setting the stage for an even stronger 2027.
