As Motorsport.com reports, NASCAR has laid down the hammer on Zane Smith, issuing a $50,000 fine to the Front Row Motorsports driver following an ugly post-race incident at Phoenix Raceway. That is a hefty price to pay for letting anger boil over after the checkered flag dropped.
The flashpoint came down in the final 15 laps of the race, when a run-in ruined a potential top ten for Smith. Carson Hocevar drifted up the track into Turn 3 after taking a bump from Ross Chastain, colliding heavily with both Smith and Josh Berry. When the dust settled, Chastain brought home a ninth-place finish, Hocevar crossed 12th, and Smith was left sliding all the way back to 15th in the final running order.
That was when the blood boiled. Furious with how it all ended, Smith throttled up after the finish and chased down Hocevar, slamming straight into the back of the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet at speeds approaching 140mph. At the moment of impact, Hocevar was traveling roughly 30mph slower.
NASCAR officials did not hesitate to act, citing Sections 4.4a & 10.5.2.5a of the Rule Book to classify the move as a safety violation, though they opted for a pure monetary penalty rather than docking points. Even though the No. 38 team jumped on the radio to inform Smith that Chastain had actually instigated the initial chaos, it fell on deaf ears. Smith and Hocevar carry a well-documented history of bitterness and run-ins, highlighted by a moment earlier this year at Chicagoland where Smith intentionally wrecked both of them.

That previous July clash already drew the attention of series officials, who dragged both drivers to the hauler for a stern chat—a background that surely influenced NASCAR's decision to drop the hammer this time around. While a separate post-race incident one week prior at Las Vegas Motor Speedway saw Michael McDowell spin Ricky Stenhouse Jr. after door-to-door contact, that lower-speed scuffle went unpunished.
Cool-down lap retaliation has increasingly drawn the ire of officials in recent seasons. Similar explosive moments include Bubba Wallace facing penalties in 2024 for running into Alex Bowman at the Chicago Street Course, and Daniel Suarez getting penalized after COTA in 2023 for making contact with Chastain and Bowman entering the pits.
