Max Verstappen is finally back on pole. The Red Bull driver swept every single segment of Qualifying at the Sepang International Circuit, topping the timesheets in style and leaving the rest of the field behind with a blistering lap of 1m 35.130s.
That stellar effort left Verstappen 0.298s clear of Lewis Hamilton, who put in his best work of the weekend to grab a spot on the front row. Isack Hadjar finished third fastest, though that position will drop when his five-place grid penalty is applied for the race. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli wound up P4 after missing a shot at the top three, while Charles Leclerc rounded out the top five for the Scuderia.
We’ve been trying many Grands Prix to get pole, sometimes a bit closer than others, but to finally get it from where we started the season, it’s pretty incredible.
Behind them, the McLaren pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri locked down P6 and P7. George Russell could only manage P8, leaving him scratching his head at a significant deficit, while Pierre Gasly and Gabriel Bortoleto wrapped up the top 10 for Alpine and Audi respectively.
Down the order, the grid picture is heavily scrambled by penalties. Liam Lawson missed out on Q3 in P11 despite an attempted tow from Arvid Lindblad, whose session was compromised alongside Franco Colapinto as both drivers opted against setting times in Q2 due to incoming grid drops. Colapinto carries a five-place hit for a collision in Baku and a further 10 places for a new engine, while Lindblad is headed to the back of the grid after swapping his power unit.
It was a painful end to the day for Nico Hulkenberg, who missed the Q2 cut by just 0.087s to finish P17. He sat just ahead of the Haas duo of Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon, the latter of whom voiced frustration that his team sent him out too early. Alex Albon took P20 for Williams, with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez bringing up the rear for Cadillac.
Reflecting on the session, Verstappen kept it simple. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “We’ve been trying many Grands Prix to get pole, sometimes a bit closer than others, but to finally get it from where we started the season, it’s pretty incredible.”
