Pre-season testing in Jarama, Madrid, is just around the corner next month, and the grid for the brand-new GEN4 era of Formula E is finally taking shape. The 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season kicks off on 18 December in Jeddah, bringing a massive driver market reshuffle alongside the introduction of exciting new machinery and fresh faces.
Let us look at the new blood stepping up. French standout Théo Pourchaire arrives with the Opel GSE Formula E Team, bringing his pedigree as a former Formula 2 World Champion and his current duties as a Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team Development Driver. Over at Paysafe Envision Racing, Briton Zak O'Sullivan earns a well-deserved promotion to a full-time seat after serving as the squad's simulator driver and rookie tester through the GEN3 era, not to mention his busy campaign in Super Formula and his 2021 Autosport BRDC Award win.
Elsewhere, the silly season delivered some proper blockbusters. Mitch Evans has split from Jaguar TCS Racing after a decade to anchor the brand-new Opel entry. Dan Ticktum has packed his bags for the fresh Fortescue Zero Racing outfit, Zane Maloney is stepping up to Nissan, Maximilian Gunther has landed at Envision, and Jake Hughes is back on the grid after a year out, partnering up with CUPRA KIRO.
Looking team by team, stability rules the house in several garages. Andretti Formula E keeps 2022/23 World Champion Jake Dennis alongside Felipe Drugovich. Citroën Racing stays put with two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne and Nick Cassidy, who stands tall as the most successful driver of the GEN3 era with 11 wins. Mahindra Racing trusts the proven partnership of 2020/21 World Champion Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara. Porsche Formula E Team keeps reigning World Champion Pascal Wehrlein paired with Nico Müller following a dominant run as Manufacturers' Champions.
Other squads bring a wild mix of youth and veteran grit. CUPRA KIRO pairs Pepe Martí with the returning Jake Hughes. Fortescue Zero Racing boasts an incredible lineup in Formula E's first Australian team, featuring Taylor Barnard—the youngest-ever race winner, pole sitter, and podium scorer in the championship—alongside Dan Ticktum. Nissan pairs Zane Maloney with 2024/25 World Champion Oliver Rowland. Paysafe Envision fields Maximilian Guenther alongside rookie Zak O'Sullivan. Meanwhile, Jaguar TCS Racing has locked in 2019/20 Champion Antonio Felix da Costa for a second year while leaving his teammate slot TBC, and the Lola Formula E Team heads into pre-season testing with both seats still unconfirmed following the retirement of Lucas di Grassi and the departure of Zane Maloney.
