Here is some massive news for the electric championship: Bridgestone Corporation is officially stepping in as the tyre supplier for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship beginning with the 2026/27 season.
That upcoming campaign brings the launch of Formula E's next-generation gen4 race car, and the machine itself is an absolute beast. We are talking about unprecedented acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.8 seconds, a peak power output of 600kW (815bhp), and permanent active All-Wheel Drive. It is simply the fastest and most powerful car in the history of the series. To handle all that madness, Bridgestone is rolling out a bespoke high-performance POTENZA tyre range tailored specifically for gen4 racing.
The partnership was unveiled at a joint launch event held in Rome, Italy, where leadership from Formula E, the FIA, and Bridgestone showed off the new tyres alongside the gen4 show car. To cope with the extreme torque and dynamic capabilities of the new hardware, Bridgestone has engineered the all-weather POTENZA gen4 tyre to provide high grip, long-lasting durability, and adaptability across city street circuits and road conditions worldwide.
Alongside the standard rubber, they also introduced the POTENZA gen4 for TYPHOON TYRE, a heavy-wet specification built for maximum grip and stability during severe rain conditions to keep the racing safe and continuous in any weather.
Sustainability is a massive focus here too. The new tyre range incorporates 65% recycled and renewable materials, featuring carbon black derived from end-of-life tyre pyrolysis oil, silica sourced from rice husks, and natural rubber compliant with Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber standards. Furthermore, production relies on 100% renewable energy for heat and electricity, with low-carbon logistics solutions managed in partnership with DHL for freight operations.
As part of this multi-year partnership, Bridgestone will also act as the Official Race Title Sponsor for four major race weekends during the 2026/27 season: Mexico City, Berlin, Shanghai, and the season finale in Tokyo.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed the move, noting that combining rich motorsport heritage with sustainable innovation makes Bridgestone a fitting partner for this new era. Yasuhiro Morita, Global CEO and Representative Executive Officer at Bridgestone Corporation, called the return to the FIA World Championship a major challenge embodying their history of passion and innovation. Marek Nawarecki, Senior Circuit Sport Director at the FIA, added that the tyres will play a key role in delivering the performance and efficiency expected from this new generation of cars, while Hiroshi Imai, Executive Officer and CPO for Global Motorsports at Bridgestone, highlighted that developing the POTENZA gen4 pushed their technology to fully unlock the overwhelming performance of the new machinery.
