That is how you experience sports at its most brutal: absolute glory followed immediately by absolute disaster. As Motorsport.com reports, Felipe Nasr’s Motul Petit Le Mans came to a violent, wall-crunching halt on the front stretch just after he, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Heinrich had locked down the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup title in the #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963.
Here is the thing about traffic on a tight circuit: it kills. Nasr was right on the gearbox of his teammate Laurens Vanthoor, who was driving the #6 factory Porsche 963 and got bottlenecked by slower cars right on the main straight. Nasr went for the outside gap, but Vanthoor swerved left to get back onto the racing line after clearing the #28 RS1 Porsche GT3 driven by Jan Heylen. Trapped with zero options, Nasr clipped Heylen's machine and slammed hard into the wall.
The resulting chaos brought out the 14th full-course caution of the day, matching the event record set back in 2017. Naturally, that record did not stand long; a 15th yellow flag waved soon after following more trouble in the GTD Pro and LMP2 categories.
Remarkably, team-on-team violence was already the theme of the day. Exactly sixty minutes prior on that same front stretch, Antonio Fuoco in the #21 AF Corse Ferrari took out Lorenzo Patrese driving the #34 Conquest Racing Ferrari. Fuoco copped a 60-second stop-and-hold penalty for his troubles, yet somehow cycled right back to the head of the GTD class order when the 15th caution shook up the field.
It was not even the only heavy blow for the Porsche 963 stable during this chaotic season finale. Earlier in the contest, Tijmen van der Helm binned the #5 JDC-Miller MotorSports entry into the wet grass while trying to pick his way past a pair of fighting GT machines.
When the race eventually lined up for the 15th restart, the class leaders were the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac holding sway in GTP, the #22 United Autosports Oreca out front in LMP2, the #14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus leading GTD Pro, and that same #21 AF Corse Ferrari pacing the GTD field.
