It is not every day a driver gets to wear their hero on their head, quite literally. Fernando Barrichello rolled out an eye-catching new helmet for the final rounds of the season, creating a stunning tribute to none other than his father, multi-time Formula 1 race winner Rubens Barrichello.
For Fernando, this was a long-held ambition coming to life. Watching his father compete while growing up with that iconic, lifelong design left a mark. While he initially wanted to carve out his own visual identity on the track, the desire to honor his father's massive career eventually took over. He spent a long time planning the execution, wanting the final product to carry the right meaning.
The layout itself tells the story. The bottom half belongs entirely to his father's legendary design, while Fernando's own styling sits directly on top as a layer over everything. It is a powerful visual statement: his father's legacy forms the foundation for everything he knows, believes, and loves about motorsport.
The reveal itself was kept completely under wraps. Rubens had zero idea what was coming until they got together and Fernando showed him the finished piece. Captured on video, the moment delivered genuine emotion, leaving the veteran driver thoroughly surprised and overjoyed.
Timing, as they say, is everything in this business. A new helmet sent by Arai mid-season provided the physical canvas right as Rubens drove his Ferrari at the Red Bull Ring. With the stars aligning, a solid couple of weeks working alongside the people from Infinity brought the concept to life after sorting through a bunch of different designs.
Once the beast was ready, sliding into the cockpit for the first time brought an immediate reward. Catching his own reflection in the little mirror perched on top of the steering wheel during radio checks made the whole journey worthwhile.
