That is a massive leap for Sebastian Wheldon, who is officially stepping up to FIA Formula 3 for the 2027 season with TRIDENT. The Milanese outfit locked down the young American after watching him secure second place in this year's Formula Regional European Championship campaign.
Looking back at his rapid rise, the machine has been moving fast for him. Wheldon first jumped into single-seater racing back in 2023, where he took the Skip Barber Formula Race Series crown with six wins. He then shifted gears to the YACademy Winter Series in 2024, grabbing second before taking third overall in the USF Juniors series.
I'm very happy to be competing in the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship with TRIDENT Motorsport. There's a lot of pressure, as I'll be racing for one of the most successful teams in the category,
The momentum only grew stronger in 2025. He banked seven total wins spread across the F4 Middle East, E4, and Italian F4 Championships. In the Italian F4 series alone, he fought his way to third overall with six victories, three poles, and nine podiums in total. It is a stunning trajectory for a driver who has proved himself on both sides of the Atlantic.
Naturally, the driver is feeling the weight of the upcoming challenge. "I'm very happy to be competing in the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship with TRIDENT Motorsport. There's a lot of pressure, as I'll be racing for one of the most successful teams in the category," Wheldon said. "However, I love a challenge and will give my all to learn quickly and achieve good results. I'm extremely grateful to TWG Motorsports and Andretti Global for their support. I can't wait for next season to begin. Let's go!"
TRIDENT Team Manager Giacomo Ricci shared that enthusiasm, pointing straight to the consistency and talent the American has put on display. "We are delighted to announce our agreement with Sebastian Wheldon for the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship season," Ricci added. "Sebastian is a driver who has demonstrated consistent growth throughout his career, distinguishing himself both in the United States and Europe. His 2026 Formula Regional season, which he finished in second place, confirmed his talent and ability to compete at the highest level. We are confident that Trident Motorsport represents the ideal environment to support him in the next step of his promising career."
