Friday practice at the Sepang International Circuit brought plenty of drama as the field got to grips with a dusty, abrasive track and severe tyre wear. Charles Leclerc seized the spotlight in the afternoon, putting Ferrari on top of the timing sheets with an impressive flying lap on the softs. His teammate Lewis Hamilton ended the day in fifth, though the Briton picked up a warning from the stewards for blocking Gabriel Bortoleto during the sessions.
Over in the Red Bull garage, Max Verstappen set the pace in the opening session before finishing fourth in FP2. Crucially, Verstappen was the sole driver to bypass the soft compound in the afternoon, setting his lap time entirely on mediums. Isack Hadjar backed up the team's strong pace with a solid third in FP1 and second in FP2, though a heavy penalty looms large for the young charger after it was confirmed he will take a five-place grid drop for Sunday's race due to a new ICE.
Mercedes found themselves chasing a tricky balance amidst high tyre overheating. George Russell showed strong one-lap speed to take second in the morning before finishing seventh later in the day, while Kimi Antonelli wound up eighth. Both drivers lost representative lap times in FP2 after making mistakes through the final corner on their soft tyre runs. Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin noted that while single-lap pace can be easily ironed out, their long-run deficit remains a genuine concern.

McLaren took a measured approach early on, splitting rear wing configurations across their cars in FP1 before switching to a more standard program in the afternoon. Lando Norris rewarded the effort by grabbing third in FP2, just over a tenth off the pace, with Oscar Piastri slotting into sixth. Senior Director of Racing Randy Singh pointed out that high tyre degradation will likely dictate a two-stop strategy for the race on the abrasive surface.
Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly led the midfield charge for Alpine by finishing inside the top ten across both sessions. His teammate Franco Colapinto faced a tougher day down the order and is already facing a steep mountain to climb on Sunday, carrying a five-place grid penalty for a collision in Baku alongside a separate 10-place drop for taking another ICE.
