Charles Leclerc finished the second practice session at the top of the timesheets, putting his Ferrari ahead of Isack Hadjar and Lando Norris during a Friday afternoon at the Sepang International Circuit where the weather tried its absolute best to ruin everyone's plans. With dark clouds looming and a ninety per cent chance of rain hanging over the track, the pit lane saw a massive early queue when the green light appeared at 1600 local time, with all twenty-two drivers eager to bank some crucial mileage before the skies potentially opened.
Pierre Gasly's engineer fretted over the incoming downpour, prompting the entire field to scramble out. Most bolted on medium tyres, though five brave souls—the McLaren and Cadillac pairs alongside Gasly—gambled on the soft compound right away. Max Verstappen immediately picked up where he left off in FP1, dropping an early benchmark of a 1m 37.785s to sit two tenths clear of George Russell. Still, the Red Bull garage wasn't entirely serene: Verstappen whined about his seating position, while Hadjar reported strange oscillations aboard the RB22.
As the threat of rain persisted, the field began bolting on soft tyres around the fifteen-minute mark. Kimi Antonelli had a lap deleted for exceeding track limits, and Russell aborted his final-sector effort, leaving the Mercedes pair fourth and second respectively. Drama flared when Gabriel Bortoleto was forced into violent evasive action after stumbling upon a dawdling Lewis Hamilton on the racing line, prompting a furious radio outburst from Bortoleto and a stewards' investigation. Hamilton, meanwhile, simply complained that he could not see through his right mirror.
By the halfway mark, the skies surprisingly cleared, and Leclerc vaulted to the summit with a 1m 37.528s, leaving him 0.137s ahead of Norris. Verstappen held third briefly until his team-mate Hadjar pulled a stunning lap out of the bag to snatch second. Further back, Bortoleto engaged in a bruising multi-lap battle with Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad, running wide and demanding his Audi crew inspect the floor of his machine.

As the session bled into its final third, Verstappen and Franco Colapinto remained the sole holdouts who refused to touch the soft rubber. While Colapinto eventually relented and made a late switch, Verstappen stayed stubbornly planted on mediums in the garage for the final stages, leaving his early time good enough for fourth overall. Hamilton managed fifth, though he faced a post-session summons for the earlier near-miss with Bortoleto, while Oscar Piastri, Russell, Antonelli, Liam Lawson, and Gasly rounded out the top ten.
Behind them, Lindblad took eleventh ahead of Bortoleto, Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso, Ollie Bearman, Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll, Valtteri Bottas, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, and Colapinto. The session ended under a Virtual Safety Car with two minutes remaining after Bortoleto's car died by the side of the track, forcing the Brazilian to climb out. With Friday's data gathering done, the field will return for Free Practice 3 on Saturday at 1230 local time before qualifying kicks off at 1600.
