Here's the thing about Formula 1 returning to a country after a long absence: the reception hits differently. Formula 1 is back at Sepang International Circuit for the first time in nine years, and as Motorsport.com reports, the homecoming brought a stunning moment for Mercedes driver George Russell.
A video shared on the team's social media channels shows a group of supporters known as 'Team GR63, Malaysia' tracking down Russell at the entrance to his garage. Wearing matching turquoise Mercedes hats, they handed him a blue folder so thick it genuinely looked like it belonged in a library.
"Oh, wow. Thank you," Russell says in the footage before the scene shifts to the Mercedes motorhome, where he sits down to absorb what is actually inside the heavy tome.
As he flips through the pages, the sheer scale of the project reveals itself. The collection contains handwritten notes, sketches, computer-generated designs, and photographs from supporters who wanted to welcome the Silver Arrows back to Malaysian soil after nearly a decade away.
"This is a book I've received from Team GR63, Malaysia," Russell says as he takes it in. "And we've got so many fan messages on here, so it's... it's incredible. This has all been handmade. There's written notes, some things on computer, drawings. It's very sweet. It's really surreal. It's really surreal and... yeah, I don't... bit lost for words, to be honest. Look at the size of this book. It's incredible. It's absolutely incredible."
That warmth from the grandstands arrives at a crucial time for the team. Mercedes struggled with tyre degradation through FP1 and FP2 on Friday in Malaysia, and while they hope to battle the heat as the weekend gets underway, that massive binder of fan mail has certainly given Russell a lift before climbing back into the machine on Saturday.
