History keeps getting rewritten in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, and the penultimate round at the Circuito Estoril was no exception. The Portuguese venue served up wild swings of fortune across the grid, but the weekend belonged entirely to Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati).
Bulega delivered an absolute masterclass to secure an Estoril hat-trick, marking his ninth treble of the season. That stunning run takes his 2026 victory tally to 29 races, officially smashing the previous single-season record of 27 set by Alvaro Bautista (Barni Spark Racing Team) back in 2023. Not content with just the wins, a 62-point haul in Portugal pushed his seasonal total to 664 points. That edges past Jonathan Rea's legendary 2019 benchmark of 663 points, sealing a monumental campaign for the Ducati star.
While Bulega dominated the top step, Alberto Surra (Motocorsa Racing) authored one of the feel-good stories of the paddock by backing up his maiden Cremona podium with three more at Estoril. In Race 1, Surra grabbed third after passing Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) on the opening lap. He followed that up in the Tissot Superpole Race by hunting down home hero Miguel Oliveira (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) on the final lap to pinch third in the #67 machine. Lady Luck then smiled on the rookie in Race 2 when Bautista crashed out at Turn 1 with just a handful of laps remaining, elevating Surra to another rostrum finish. Even without the late drama, finishing P3, P3, and P4 across the weekend would have marked a career-best showing.
For others, the raw speed simply failed to translate into the silverware they deserved. Oliveira, who had Turn 7 named in his honor ahead of the weekend, missed out on the Superpole Race podium by a razor-thin margin and salvaged eighth in Race 2 after running wide at Turn 6 on the opening lap. Bautista endured a similarly frustrating weekend despite showing his strongest practice form of the season with sixth, ninth, and eighth-place finishes in the FP sessions, followed by 12th in Tissot Superpole. After ninth in Race 1 and fifth in the Superpole Race, the two-time WorldSBK Champion was sitting comfortably in third before his late race-ending tumble at Turn 1.
Further down the order, the battle for the minor championship placings took a dramatic turn. Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) locked down the Best Independent Rider honors for 2026 despite a grueling weekend, tightening his grip on third in the overall standings. Rivals struggled to capitalize: Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) had a quiet outing with a best of 10th in the Superpole Race and 11th in Race 1, while Alex Lowes crashed out of seventh place at Turn 4 during Race 2. With only 62 points still on the table at Jerez, Montella holds a 53-point cushion over Alex Lowes, while Sam Lowes sits 65 points back and mathematically out of the running for third place.
