Here is the thing about getting your big break in Formula 1: before you even turn a wheel in anger on a Grand Prix weekend, you have to pick a number. Following the massive announcement that Rafael Camara will step up to replace Esteban Ocon at Haas, the young Brazilian has already shared the digits he is hoping to run when he makes his Formula 1 debut in 2027. Of course, nothing is set in stone until the FIA publishes the official entry list.
Like many drivers before him, the 21-year-old has gone for something with a deeply personal touch. His first choice would have been five, but that is already taken by Gabi, meaning Camara looked elsewhere for inspiration. The solution came straight from the calendar: number 50. It is a neat nod to his birthday on 05/05/2005, an idea he settled on after chatting with his father.
Haas certainly has some familiarity with those digits. Reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa has used the number 50 during FP1 sessions, and Ollie Bearman did the exact same thing during his substitute appearances in 2024. That very seat at Haas came down to a tense shootout at Portugal’s Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, where Camara went head-to-head with Hirakawa in a Testing of Previous Cars test. It was an intense two days on a new track with a new car and team, but his performance blew Team Principal Ayao Komatsu away enough to secure a full-time drive.
Reflecting on the pressure of those two days, Camara admitted he simply tried to absorb everything and deliver his absolute maximum. When the call finally came from Ayao while he was in Milan, his initial reaction was pure disbelief. He had to ask, "Are you sure?" before sharing a great hug with his parents in person.
Currently leading the Formula 2 standings by seven points over Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov, Camara is quick to credit his family for the immense sacrifices they made. Hailing from outside the traditional motorsport world, they had to navigate an unknown path to get him to the doorstep of Formula 1. Now, with a Haas contract in his pocket and a personal number picked out, he is simply proud and enjoying the moment.
