What an absolute machine Max Verstappen is on a Saturday, putting his Red Bull right on pole for the first time this year as Formula 1 heads to Kuala Lumpur’s spectacular Sepang International Circuit for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Right alongside him on the front row will be none other than the Ferrari of arch-rival Lewis Hamilton. It is the kind of setup that promises pure chaos before the field even reaches the braking zone.
Qualifying actually delivered a Red Bull one-three punch, but Isack Hadjar has taken a power unit penalty that shoves him all the way down to P8 on the grid. That unfortunate drop reshuffles the deck, leaving row two to be claimed by championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes alongside the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
Further back, we get a clean all-McLaren third row with reigning champion Lando Norris leading his team mate Oscar Piastri. Behind them, that penalized Isack Hadjar pairs up with our last race winner, Mercedes driver George Russell, to lock down row four. Rounding out the top 10 are Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto.
Down at the very back of the pack, the grid cleanup features Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad dealing with massive setbacks. Colapinto is carrying a five-place penalty for a Turn 1 collision last time out in Baku, plus an extra 10-place drop for taking on new power unit elements. Meanwhile, Lindblad has also swallowed new PU components, which dumps him into a combined 30-place demotion.
Now, with penalties applied and the grid finally sorted, we wait to see how this wild lineup translates into race pace.
