Now, as Motorsport.com reports, Kimi Antonelli stands firmly on the brink of his maiden Formula 1 world title. Nine victories in his sophomore campaign have brought the Mercedes driver to a stunning position ahead of Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix. All the 20-year-old needs to secure the crown is a ninth-place finish, or simply for neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton to take the win. If he pulls it off, he will shatter Sebastian Vettel's record to become the youngest-ever champion by more than three years.
That meteoric rise has caught the attention of Daniel Ricciardo. Having debuted at 22 and retired at 35, the Australian spoke on the Beyond The Grid podcast about the sheer force of youth in a brutal sport. Ricciardo put it simply, stating that "ignorance is a superpower" when you are young and shielded from the crushing weight of the paddock.
Drawing from his own past, Ricciardo compared the Mercedes youngster's trajectory to his own breakout 2014 season. Back then, following Mark Webber's retirement, he joined Red Bull Racing alongside Sebastian Vettel and unexpectedly claimed all three of the team's victories while outperforming the reigning four-time world champion. It is a striking parallel to the way Antonelli has managed to eclipse Russell, the established star at Mercedes, during their time together this year.

Ricciardo noted that youth protects drivers from the heavy accumulation of mental baggage that builds over time. As the years grind on, difficult decisions—like his own choice to move on from Red Bull in 2018—and unmet expectations start to weigh heavily on a driver. But right now, Antonelli is operating in a sweet spot where he is blindingly fast and entirely unburdened, treating the machine and the track with a pure, uncomplicated hunger to win.
After taking victory at the United States GP, Antonelli made it clear he has no intention of changing his approach as the coronation looms. He intends to keep the same mindset, chase another win, and simply have as much fun as possible. For a driver on the verge of history, that lightweight, fearless approach might just be the most terrifying thing he can offer his rivals.
