Here's the thing, as Speedcafe reports: a brand new operation is officially joining the Formula 2 championship for the 2027-2029 cycle. LN4 Fusion stands as the only new entrant for that window, taking over the spot previously held by AIX Racing after purchasing selected assets from them and securing an Italian licence to race.
This whole project is born from the efforts of the reigning Formula 1 world champion, who launched LN4 Fusion back in September alongside karting outfit Fusion Motorsport and financial backers led by Dan Richards. F2 CEO Bruno Michel noted that the championship saw considerable interest ahead of the selection process, but ultimately welcomed the newcomer, stating they will bring considerable expertise and make a valuable contribution.
The grid will maintain its structure of 11 teams running two cars apiece, keeping the total field at 22 drivers. LN4 CEO Dan Richards expressed pride in being selected for the FIA Formula 2 grid for 2027, while also acknowledging the steep climb ahead. The focus is now on building proper foundations, gathering exceptional people, and giving drivers and the team the best possible opportunity to compete at the highest level.
Behind the scenes, the leadership team is already locked in. Rene Rosin, previously in charge of Prema, steps in as team principal for LN4 Fusion's European operation, while former Prema technical chief Guillaume Capietto takes on the role of racing director. Although the squad's two F2 drivers are yet to be confirmed, the organisation has already locked in James Egozi, Gabriel Gomez, and Dion Gowda for its 2027 Formula 3 campaign.
Meanwhile, the 2027 F2 field is starting to take shape elsewhere too. Australian James Wharton has signed with Trident for his first full season in the category, stepping up after spending the past two years in F3.
