Sergio Perez is staying in Formula 1 for the foreseeable future. Cadillac has handed the Mexican driver a multi-year contract extension, tying down his services just ahead of his home race in Mexico where he will make his 300th F1 start.
Assessing the move, F1 Correspondent Lawrence Barretto explains that while Cadillac's position towards the back of the pack makes pure race classifications a blunt instrument for judging pace, the internal consensus is clear. Both the team and his camp feel the 36-year-old is driving at an impressively high level.
Perez returned to the grid this year for Cadillac's debut season in the championship. Following a year on the sidelines after a difficult split with Red Bull, he has shown remarkably few signs of rust. His confidence is firmly back, with Perez himself stating that he considers himself one of the best drivers in F1 right now.
Life at the back of the grid with a brand-new American team finding its feet was never going to be easy, but Perez has refused to let the results bring him down. Instead, he is channeling the deep well of experience from his six wins and 39 podiums into pushing the outfit forward. That experience has proven invaluable during this debut campaign.

There were certainly questions about how Perez would bounce back from the tough conclusion to his time with Red Bull. His initial deal included options from 2027 onwards, but Cadillac quickly realized they had made the right call. He has consistently extracted the maximum from the package, and his technical feedback has directly aided the team's development progress. Meanwhile, Perez has rediscovered his love for racing while witnessing General Motors' heavy commitment and investment firsthand.
Rather than merely triggering an option for a second season, both sides sat down to negotiate a brand-new multi-year extension. This new agreement could very well be the final chapter of a career that has taken him through Sauber, McLaren, Force India/Racing Point, and Red Bull, but it is set to keep him on the grid as he approaches his 40s.
The deal brings stability to one side of the Cadillac garage by securing a proven race winner. For Perez, it removes all future uncertainty and allows him to focus entirely on the job at hand, backed by a team that firmly believes in his abilities.
