Here's the thing about splitting car specifications across a garage: it leaves nowhere to hide. Mercedes rolled into the Marina Bay Street Circuit with a bold plan, putting George Russell back on the Azerbaijan-specification of the car while Kimi Antonelli kept the newer package introduced last time out in Malaysia. That decision came after the team found the updates inconclusive at Sepang, compounded by the fact that Russell is facing a grid penalty for an unavoidable engine change this weekend.
Unfortunately for Antonelli, the championship leader spent Friday playing catch-up. He finished seventh in the opening practice hour and repeated that exact position in Sprint Qualifying, trailing behind his teammate throughout the day. Russell, running the older spec, immediately flew to the top of the timesheets in practice before securing second-quickest in the sprint shootout.
I think it's going to be a difficult weekend, unless we can pull something out tomorrow,
Asked after the session if he was surprised by the lack of lap time, Antonelli was remarkably honest about his struggles. He confessed that the difficulties started right away in FP1 and that there is still a mountain of data to unpack regarding this specific package.
"The car is very difficult, very unpredictable and very difficult to put a lap together," Antonelli said. "So yeah, it's a shame because I was coming [here] with high hopes, but so far it's been very difficult."

Looking ahead, the Italian knows he faces a steep uphill climb to match the pace seen on the other side of the garage unless the engineering crew can work overnight miracles. The gap is glaring, but the championship leader is not throwing in the towel just yet.
"I think it's going to be a difficult weekend, unless we can pull something out tomorrow," Antonelli admitted. "But other than that, it's going to be very tricky. I don't really see where we can find seven tenths, but you never know. Maybe tonight, Bono [Pete Bonnington, Antonelli’s race engineer], the engineers, we're going to find something in the car. And for sure, I'm going to try to improve a little bit the driving, and then we'll see tomorrow where we end up."
