Here is the thing about the frantic stretch of intermediate tracks on the calendar: teams do not have to guess when it comes to the rubber hitting the asphalt. Goodyear is bringing the exact same left- and right-side tire setup used last weekend at Kansas for this Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Chase presented by Mobil 1 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Cup Series squads already hold plenty of experience with this specific combination. They have run it across several intermediate venues throughout the schedule, which includes the Las Vegas spring race earlier this year.
Justin Fantozzi, Goodyear’s Director of Racing for the Americas, explained the logic clearly. “Our intermediate tire package has been run consistently throughout the year, and has raced at a number of tracks like Las Vegas since the March race here,” he said, adding that “teams can lean on this wealth of data to decide on their setups as the stakes get higher with each race in The Chase.”
Meanwhile, NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series competitors also get a familiar feel, having last run this setup at Texas Motor Speedway in May. These 15-inch Goodyear tires will meet the standard for 1-mile tracks or longer and feature inner liners when they hit the track on Saturday in Sin City.
When it comes to the math of the weekend, the tire allotments are strictly set. Cup Series teams receive 11 total sets, breaking down into eight new sets for the race, one for qualifying that transfers to the race, and two for practice. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series field gets six total sets, consisting of four new sets for the race, one for qualifying that transfers to the race, and one for practice.
