That is how you snatch a victory. As Motorsport.com reports, Sammy Smith grabbed his very first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win in a wild Talladega finish, sweeping past Ty Majeski in the final seconds to take the checkers by a razor-thin 0.091s margin ahead of Tyler Ankrum.
Driving the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, Smith pulled off the decisive move after pushing Majeski past Kaden Honeycutt before darting around him. It is a massive result for the driver in his 11th career start. He already has three victories in the NASCAR O'Reilly Series under his belt, and next year he is set to become a full-time driver in Trucks with TRICON Garage.
"Yeah, just a great team, honestly," said Smith, praising crew chief Brian Pattie and spotter Michael Fisher after the race.
The race itself was an absolute war of attrition dominated by constant tire issues and heavy cautions. Early on, Austin Green took control before Justin Haley and Christian Eckes hit trouble with flat tires. Things boiled over when Stewart Friesen cut a tire in the pack, triggering an eight-truck pileup that also collected Kris Wright, Corey LaJoie, and Tony Stewart. Cleetus McFarland was swept up in that chaos too, slamming the inside wall and exiting his second career Truck Series start early.
Stage 1 ended under caution with Gio Ruggiero taking the win, though his day fell apart immediately after when he stalled on pit road. More tire trouble struck drivers like Corey Heim and Connor Smith during the following runs, while Grant Enfinger also suffered a cut tire while leading the inside line. Stage 2 ultimately concluded under caution as Tanner Gray claimed the stage win.
As the laps wound down, the carnage continued with a heavy backstretch crash involving Jake Garcia, C.J. Jones, and Connor Smith. Later, a bad bump sent Gio Rognoni careening into the outside wall before getting clobbered by Enfinger in a terrifying hit that sent the newly crowned ARCA champion briefly airborne.
When the dust settled, a frantic two-lap shootout decided it all. Smith played the final restart to perfection, pushing Majeski before sweeping to the outside for the win. Behind him, just 0.034s separated four trucks fighting tooth and nail for second place at the line. Tyler Ankrum claimed that runner-up spot, with Austin Green third, Ty Majeski fourth, and Kaden Honeycutt fifth. Landen Lewis, Brenden Queen, Layne Riggs, Spencer Boyd, and Corey Heim rounded out the top ten, leaving Honeycutt with a slightly larger championship lead 43 points clear of Riggs.
