The 29th edition of the Motul Petit Le Mans arrives at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta with 24 separate championship battles waiting to be settled over 10 hours of racing. That massive tally covers four driver championships, four team titles, and three manufacturer crowns in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, alongside a matching set of honors in the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup, plus the Jim Trueman and Bob Akin awards.
Over in Grand Touring Prototype, Cadillac holds a commanding 136-point manufacturer lead over Porsche. Just starting the race is enough for Cadillac to secure the manufacturer's championship and a seventh team title for Cadillac Whelen. Jack Aitken, who won the overall and GTP class last year alongside Earl Bamber and Frederik Vesti, could even lock up the driver's crown on Friday if he puts together a strong qualifying run behind the wheel of the No. 31 Cadillac V-Series.R.
We’ve actually four points behind. It’s basically like we’re going into the last round tied, so we know we just need to beat them,
Standing in their way is Laurin Heinrich, the breakout star of 2026 piloting the No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963. Heinrich is the sole driver mathematically capable of stopping Aitken, though he faces a 147-point deficit and needs a win with Aitken finishing lower than ninth in the 11-car field. "I could not have envisioned or imagined being in this situation right now because the initial plan was for me to just do three races," Heinrich said. Despite the long odds, the Porsche has already secured the Michelin Endurance Cup Team Championship.
Meanwhile, the Le Mans Prototype 2 class tells a vastly different story with a razor-thin single-digit margin. Tom Dillmann and Jeremy Clarke clawed back from a 107-point deficit after June's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen by storming to three straight class victories in the No. 43 Inter Europol Competition ORECA LMP2 07. That incredible momentum has vaulted them into a slim 4-point advantage over Alex Quinn and George Kurtz in the No. 04 CrowdStrike Racing by APR ORECA LMP2 07.
Behind them, Dan Goldburg sits third in the standings 101 points back in the No. 22 United Autosports USA ORECA LMP2 07, while 2025 Trueman Award winner PJ Hyett and Dane Cameron are 108 points in arrears in the No. 99 AO Racing ORECA LMP2 07 following a tough outing at Road America. With four pole awards already to his name this year, Clarke is also locked in a fierce battle with Kurtz for the Jim Trueman Award.
"It’s a new game, because four points is basically like zero," Dillmann noted regarding the tight battle at the top. Quinn is equally unfazed by losing the points lead heading into the finale. "We’ve actually four points behind. It’s basically like we’re going into the last round tied, so we know we just need to beat them," Quinn said. "We’ve got nothing to lose – we can only gain. Yeah, full attack!"
Fans can catch the action starting with the first three hours broadcast on NBC at Noon ET on Saturday, October 3, with live coverage carrying through to the finish on NBCSN. International viewers can tune in via IMSA.TV and the official IMSA YouTube channel, while U.S. viewers can stream live on Peacock.
