As Motorsport.com reports, the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix turned into a harsh reality check for McLaren, where a double-points finish on Sunday could not entirely erase the damage done by an internal garage disaster the day before. While Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri ultimately salvaged points in the main event, the weekend will be remembered for a wet-weather Sprint race collision that left the team furious and scrambling to reset its internal boundaries.
The boiling point arrived on the final lap of the Sprint. Chasing down Charles Leclerc, Norris fired an aggressive lunge down the inside of his teammate at Turn 5. The two Papaya machines made heavy contact, destroying Oscar Piastri's race and sending him into the wall for a DNF, while Lando Norris crawled across the line in eighth place and robbed the squad of crucial points.
Andrea Stella did not mince words, immediately hauling both drivers into a meeting to establish new rules of engagement. As Stella revealed after Sunday's Grand Prix, the incident was deemed completely unacceptable, though he noted both drivers shared that assessment. Rather than pointing fingers or endlessly dissecting the mechanics of the crash, the team principal chose to use the wreckage to reinforce a fundamental philosophy: the collective interests of Woking must always come before personal ambitions, whether an individual is sitting in the cockpit, working in the pitlane, or stationed back at the factory.
Norris offered an apology over the team radio during the closing stages, a response that Stella expects to become standard operating procedure from everyone representing McLaren Mastercard moving forward. It is a clear message about accountability from the top down.
Beyond the garage politics, Stella was entirely candid about the hard engineering limits of the MCL40. Sunday's result matched the car's current performance envelope, echoing the competitive order seen in qualifying and proving that the machine simply lacks the raw aerodynamic pace to consistently battle Ferrari and Red Bull for victories.
Yet hope remains on the horizon as a critical triple-header approaches with stops in Austin, Mexico, and Brazil. Stella confirmed that a major development package is on the way from Woking, designed to add podium-fighting pace and help close the gap to their main championship rivals.
