Here is the thing about Formula 1 rookie sessions: they always shake up the paddock, and the Mexico Grand Prix weekend is about to get a whole lot busier for the next generation. As Motorsport.com reports, a fresh crop of youngsters is stepping into the opening practice session, with several headline names giving up their seats so the teams can clear their mandatory rookie outings.
Leading the charge of debutants is Gabriele Mini, who will jump straight into Franco Colapinto’s Alpine A526 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The former Formula 2 championship leader currently sits fourth in the standings with a very slim title chance, having been an Alpine protege since the start of the 2023 season after finishing as runner-up in the Formula Regional European Championship. Mini, who is also a Formula 3 runner-up, has been building his experience through Alpine’s Testing of Previous Cars programme. "I'm looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the A526 and taking part in my first ever Free Practice 1 in Formula 1," Mini said, expressing gratitude to team boss Flavio Briatore and managing director Steve Nielsen. This outing marks Alpine's third rookie appearance of the year, following reserve driver Paul Aron's runs at the Hungaroring and Monza.
Over at Atlassian Williams F1 Team, reserve Luke Browning is stepping in to take over the FW48 for both Mexico and Brazil, replacing Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz. Browning, currently lying 13th in his maiden Super Formula campaign, will gobble up the team's remaining rookie FP1 sessions for the year. "I’m happy to be back in the FW48 and grateful to be trusted by Atlassian Williams F1 Team with all four of the team’s rookie FP1 sessions this year," Browning noted.

Meanwhile, Mercedes is handing the W17 over to 2023 F2 runner-up Frederik Vesti for his third outing of the season, taking the place of George Russell. Vesti offered a public nod to his colleague, saying, "Huge thank you to George for letting me drive your car." It comes at an interesting time for Russell, who is probably eager for clean track time after describing his recent Austin weekend as having yielded "six good laps, 50 bad laps" that left him completely at a loss to understand.
Finally, Freddie Slater will take on Audi’s rookie duties in Mexico and Brazil, rounding out a busy weekend of shuffling drivers as teams rush to fulfill the year-long requirement of four rookie entries across the season.
