Formula 1 is finally heading back to the African continent. According to FormulaUno.it, a ten-year agreement has been officially struck to bring the world championship to Rwanda starting in the early 2030s, filling a void that has lasted since the final race at Kyalami in 1993.
This massive global expansion is built on a strategic partnership between the championship and the Rwandan government via the Rwanda Development Board. The plan centers on constructing a brand new, permanent, FIA Grade 1 accredited circuit in the Bugesera region. Located about 40 kilometers south of the capital city Kigali and right next to the new international airport, the track will use the area's natural elevation changes to challenge the drivers and give fans a great view.
The timing and demographics make this an enormous step for the series, allowing Formula 1 to finally race across every inhabited continent on the planet. The numbers backing this up are wild: Africa already boasts over 100 million Formula 1 fans, with roughly 60 percent of supporters in sub-Saharan Africa under the age of 35. Beyond just the racing, the project aims to establish a major hub for tourism, massive events, conferences, and the development of local skills for future generations.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali highlighted the historic weight of the move, stating: “Today is a historic moment for Formula 1. With the entry of Rwanda on the calendar from the next decade, our sport will race in every inhabited continent, bringing the World Championship closer than ever to fans across the globe.
President of the Republic of Rwanda Paul Kagame shared immense pride in securing the deal, noting: “Today belongs to Africa.
