As Crash.net reports, George Russell is facing a monumental psychological battle to recover from being "broken" in his Formula 1 title defeat to Mercedes team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli sealed his maiden F1 world title with four races to spare after taking third place in last Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit. Meanwhile, Russell could only manage a sixth-place finish after picking up a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar on the opening lap.
That disappointing Sunday capped off a brutal campaign. Russell began the year as the clear favourite and kicked things off with a win at the opening race in Australia. Unfortunately, a mix of struggles with the 2026 Mercedes car and a punishing run of poor reliability completely derailed his championship ambitions.
Reflecting on the championship outcome, Sky Sports F1's Martin Brundle laid bare the reality of the situation to Sky Sports News. Brundle pointed out that Russell waited a long time at Williams as a Mercedes junior for his big break, only to arrive just as the team stopped winning. Then, a new generation arrived with the 2026 machines, and Antonelli transformed from a liability in year one into a generational talent in year two.

According to Brundle, what will hit the 28-year-old Briton hardest is simply the stopwatch. Russell could not match Antonelli for consistent speed, particularly in the second half of stints on a used set of tyres. While Russell suffered an awful season full of bad luck, Antonelli also had his fair share of unreliability and dropped out of races. Brundle believes this ordeal might break George, but it could also make him if he manages to find an overdrive and lift his game for next year.
The emotional toll was plain to see when Russell left the circuit early and skipped his mandatory media obligations, looking distraught after Sunday's race. Later, in a candid post on Instagram, the driver admitted that he endured more bad days than good in 2026. Speaking from the heart, he confessed that the year started off exactly as hoped before quickly unravelling with tough luck and poor performances, leaving him dealing with confusion and the heavy burden of picking himself up week in, week out.
