Here's the thing about this 2026 Moto2 championship: the momentum pendulum just keeps swinging back and forth, and Izan Guevara (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2) just delivered an absolute masterclass at the Red Bull Ring. The #28 machine rolled out a stunning performance to take his second win of the season, grabbing a massive 25-point haul that chops World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez's (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) advantage down to 35.5 points.
Things kicked off with immediate drama right from the start. Gonzalez nailed it from the middle of the front row to grab the holeshot into Turn 1, while polesitter Filip Salač (OnlyFans American Racing Team) and Ivan Ortola (QJMOTOR – Campolor – MSI) went elbow to elbow. Salač played it brilliantly through Turn 2, taking the inside line to snatch the lead. That completely disrupted Gonzalez's momentum, sending the title leader tumbling down into the lower reaches of the top 10.
Then the real carving began. Ortola and the fast-starting Guevara sliced past Salač at Turn 9, demoting the Czech rider to P3. As the leading trio started stretching their legs, Gonzalez tried to muscle past fourth-place David Alonso (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team), but it didn't work. By Lap 6 of 23, Gonzalez found himself 2.4s off the lead.
By Lap 11, Guevara had built a 1.8s advantage over the scrap between Ortola and Salač, with Alonso sitting a further second back and Gonzalez trailing the Colombian. Soon enough, Salač made his move past Ortola at Turn 4 for second. Ortola then slipped behind Alonso on Lap 15 after a moment at Turn 2b. But up front, Guevara suffered a heart-in-mouth moment on Lap 19 when his front end folded at Turn 9. What a save. It cost the leader a second, shrinking his gap to 2.2s.
Guevara steadied the ship like a pro, keeping the gap above two seconds with three laps to go. Salač kept Alonso 0.9s behind him, while Gonzalez sat 1.1s off a podium spot in P4, with Ortola just 0.3s behind the championship leader. Aside from that heart-stopping front-end scare, it was a flawless Sunday drive to victory for Guevara.
Salač and Alonso completed the podium, while Gonzalez salvaged 13 points in P4 ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. Ortola couldn't bite back, finishing P5 as the rider third in the standings. Behind them, Alonso Lopez (ITALJET Gresini Moto2), Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team), Barry Baltus (REDS Fantic Racing), Deniz Öncü (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team), and rookie Luca Lunetta (BETA Tools SpeedRS Team) rounded out the top 10. Unfortunately, Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) was forced to retire with issues, leaving questions over the MotoGP-bound Australian's title hopes. Now, less than 40 points split the leaders as the paddock heads to Japan.
