Andrea Kimi Antonelli is officially a Formula 1 world champion, and he has done it by completely rewriting the history books, as RaceFans reports.
The Mercedes star, who turned 20 in August, has claimed the drivers' crown to become the youngest champion of all time. In doing so, he has lowered the previous record by more than three years. Sebastian Vettel, the previous record holder, was 23 years old when he secured the first of his four championship titles back in 2010.
Antonelli's ascent has been staggering. He made his Formula 1 debut last season at the age of 18, and it did not take long for him to find the top step. He grabbed the first victory of his career at the second round of this season in China, which immediately kicked off a blistering run of five consecutive victories that launched him into the lead of the championship standings.
Vettel's long-standing record had stood for 16 years, a mark from an era when Antonelli was just four years old. Curiously, much like Vettel did back in the day, Antonelli has captured the world championship in just his second full season of racing in Formula 1.
