When the lights go out and race cars leave the grid, all eyes turn to the high-speed action on track. But behind every Formula E race weekend lies an extraordinary, dedicated workforce working tirelessly behind the scenes.
As part of FIA Volunteers and Officials Month, the FIA and the wider motorsport community is shining a spotlight on the unsung heroes whose passion, dedication, and fast-thinking keep our drivers, fans and teams safe, and our E-Prix's running smoothly. Without these dedicated individuals, who often go unnoticed, race weekends simply could not happen. From trackside "orange marshals" managing safety during live sessions, to officials overseeing event logistics, volunteers give up their time purely for the love of the sport. Volunteering in motorsport also builds a global family - a welcoming community where people from all backgrounds and corners of the world unite over a shared love for racing.
He has done this for quite a while and it really interested me when I was younger. So, when I got the ability to come help out where I could, I took it.
Beyond the trackside action, technical precision forms a core pillar of the volunteer operation. FIA technical delegates and scrutineers work around the clock to ensure every car strictly adheres to technical and sporting regulations. Post-session checks on the weighbridge measure everything from overall weight and weight distribution to car dimensions and tire pressures. During active sessions, scrutineers monitor over 1,400 data points per car, analysing more real-time parameters than individual teams can process to guarantee fairness across the grid. Many technical volunteers bring real-world experience from mechanics and engineering, often starting their journey through simple "marshal taster days" at tracks like Donington Park before branching out and volunteering at a wide range of global motorsport events.
"I know I have a family no matter where I go, not only here in the United States," says Danya, a motorsport volunteer from Guatemala. "I know I can always find a community and find my people that love racing." It's this mutual love and desire to be close to the sport that is echoed time and time again by the volunteers who show up come rain or shine, but for others the connection goes even deeper.
For some, the inspiration and drive to be involved in volunteering is deeply personal and rooted in family legacy. Erin, a volunteer from Texas, followed directly in her father’s footsteps to step into the circuit. "What inspired me to become a volunteer in motorsport is actually my Dad," she shares. "He has done this for quite a while and it really interested me when I was younger. So, when I got the ability to come help out where I could, I took it."
For FIA Volunteers and Officials Month, Formula E wants to thank every volunteer who selflessly gives their time to keep Formula E events safe for everyone.
