What an absolute masterpiece of dirt-track reflex and sheer survival. As Motorsport.com reports, Corey Day seized his third victory of the 2026 NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts season in a jaw-dropping, back-and-forth duel with Carson Kvapil at Las Vegas Motor Speedway that ended with the winner's machine battered against the concrete.
The closing laps were pure, unfiltered chaos. Kvapil hunted down Day and made a pass for the lead with ten laps to go, only for Day to instantly answer by launching his No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to the very top of the track and snatching it back. They traded blows side-by-side until Kvapil cleanly cleared him again with two laps remaining. That was when Day dug deep into his sprint car bag of tricks, sliding sideways, tagging the wall at the exit of Turn 2 even harder, and bouncing off the concrete once more through the final corner to pip Kvapil by a tiny 0.287s margin of victory after they even touched doors at the white flag.
Behind the wild scrap for the win, Jesse Love crossed the line third, Brent Crews took fourth, and Taylor Gray grabbed fifth. The rest of the top ten was rounded out by Sam Mayer, Jeremy Clements, William Sawalich, Austin Hill, and Anthony Alfredo. Meanwhile, 13th-place finisher Sheldon Creed managed to hang onto the championship lead, though the chasing pack closed in: Kvapil sits 19 points back, Love is 22 points adrift, Justin Allgaier dropped to 31 points behind following a wreck, and Day clawed his way to 41 points off the lead after gaining over 50 points on the leader across the weekend.
The early running had its own intense rhythm. Creed jumped ahead of Day at the start, but Day reeled him in ten laps later and controlled the rest of Stage 1 to take the segment win ahead of Mayer and Rajah Caruth, while Creed plummeted outside the top ten. Drama struck immediately on the pit stop cycle when Jones won the race off pit road but suffered a loose left-front wheel on the No. 20, triggering a disastrous multi-car wreck on the restart that wiped out Jones and reigning champion Allgaier when Jones over-corrected into the wall.
Mayer took command for Stage 2, winning it ahead of Day and Caruth, while Christian Retzlaff suffered an unscheduled pit stop due to a flat right-front tire. Stage 3 brought a fresh mix of pit lane miscues: William Sawalich won the exit race, Mayer was sent to the rear for a loose wheel rolling away, Caruth copped an uncontrolled tire penalty, and Taylor Gray had to pit again to tighten a loose wheel. Kvapil grazed the wall trying to clear Sawalich on the restart, allowing Day to breeze past both.
From there, it was a high-speed chess match until traffic intervened. Day struggled to work his way around Sammy Smith, which allowed Smith's teammate Kvapil to reel the leader in and set up that heart-stopping, wall-bouncing grand finale.
