Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) laid down an absolute marker at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan, smashing the lap record to snatch pole position by just 0.110 seconds. His blistering 1:42.371 put him clear of Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team), with Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completing the front row after just denying Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing). With only 12 points separating them in the Championship, the stage is set for absolute fireworks.
Over in Q1, Ai Ogura (SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team) gave the home fans plenty to cheer about by leading the early stages ahead of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team). Raul Fernandez slotted in right behind his teammate Ogura before the second runs kicked off. As the session heated up, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) suffered a fast but stylishly recovered crash—rider ok—leaving it all down to a final lap shootout. Fernandez homed in on Ogura to finish just 0.001 short, safely heading through alongside the home hero.
When Q2 got underway, the title heavyweights came out swinging. Initially, it was Marc Marquez leading BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP's Alex Marquez at the top by a mere 0.065 seconds. But points leader Martin had other plans, putting together a tidy, red-sector flyer to establish that stunning 1:42.371 benchmark and throw down the gauntlet.
Marc Marquez tried to answer back, but mistakes at Turn 3 on successive attempts hampered his charges. Meanwhile, Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) was flying with Acosta right on his tail. The duo screamed around the Mobility Resort Motegi and over the line, with Acosta leapfrogging the Aprilia into third and leaving Bezzecchi fourth at the head of Row 2.

Marc Marquez finally kept Turn 3 drama-free on his last run with Martin getting out of his way, but it still wasn't enough to depose the Aprilia rider. Behind the leading quartet, Alex Marquez took P5 while Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) closed out the second row in sixth after losing out in the final sector. Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3) put in his best Q2 of the season to qualify seventh, with Q1 graduate Raul Fernandez taking eighth and Diogo Moreira (Pro Honda LCR) ninth. Johann Zarco (Castrol LCR Honda) rounded out the top ten following a crash—rider ok—while Ai Ogura had to settle for P11 on home turf. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) completed the Q2 runners in P12, just ahead of Bagnaia, who was the first to miss the cut in Q1.
With Martin leading Marc Marquez in both the standings and on the grid, and Acosta lurking in third with nothing to lose, the battle lines are drawn. Another massive twist in the 2026 title fight awaits.
