The master of Motegi strikes again, claiming his fourth victory at the venue and dragging himself right back to the sharp end of the championship. The 2026 Motul Grand Prix of Japan gave us a brilliant double victory for Marc Marquez of the Ducati Lenovo Team, who sliced past title rival Jorge Martin from Aprilia Racing on Sunday afternoon. That masterclass leaves just two points between them as the series packs its bags for Indonesia.
It was the 2024 World Champion, Martin, who salvaged 20 crucial points to cling onto the championship lead, while his teammate Marco Bezzecchi managed to hold off a charging Enea Bastianini from Red Bull KTM Tech3 to secure a podium finish.
Before the lights went out, the paddock was locked in a fierce tyre debate: hard rear Michelin or medium? Every single rider rolled the dice on the hard rear option. A massive gamble with barely any running on that compound all weekend, setting up 24 laps into the unknown.
When the red lights went out at the Mobility Resort Motegi, pole-sitter Martin grabbed the holeshot to keep Marc Marquez behind him. Further back, Bezzecchi and Alex Marquez of BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP—who faced a double Long Lap penalty—pounced on Pedro Acosta. The Austrian GP winner tumbled from the outside of the front row down to fifth place, sliding even further to eighth by lap two as Bastianini, Raul Fernandez of the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team, and home favourite Ai Ogura pushed him out of the early top ten.
By lap five, Martin and Marc Marquez had stretched a 0.4-second gap while trading 1:43.6 laps, with Bezzecchi lurking 0.6 seconds behind the reigning World Champion. Meanwhile, Alex Marquez served his first Long Lap on lap five to drop to fifth, promoting Bastianini to fourth. The second penalty on lap seven dumped Alex Marquez down to ninth, just behind Tissot Sprint podium finisher Diogo Moreira of Pro Honda LCR.

By lap ten, the leading duo proved too quick for Bezzecchi, pulling 1.9 seconds clear of the Italian. The two recent world champions exchanged fastest laps before Marc Marquez finally made his decisive lunge on lap 11 at turn nine, parking his Ducati firmly on the apex.
Martin tried to fire back, briefly reducing the deficit to 0.7 seconds as Bezzecchi and Bastianini found late speed. But Marc Marquez slammed the door with a 1:43.291 lap to stretch his advantage back out, ultimately cruising home 1.2 seconds clear to take his 79th victory. Behind them, Bastianini launched a frantic late-race assault on Bezzecchi with four consecutive fastest laps, but time ran out, leaving Bezzecchi to claim the final step of the podium.
Further down the order, Raul Fernandez won a ferocious scrap for fifth ahead of home hero Ai Ogura and Pedro Acosta. Francesco Bagnaia of the Ducati Lenovo Team rolled home in eighth, followed by Fermin Aldeguer for BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP and Luca Marini representing Honda HRC Castrol on home soil to round out the top ten. Brad Binder took 11th for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Fabio Quartararo finished 12th for Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP, Somkiat Chantra grabbed 13th for Honda HRC Castrol, returning rider Maverick Viñales took 14th for Red Bull KTM Tech3, and Franco Morbidelli secured the final point in 15th for the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team.
Now, the championship sits on a knife-edge. Martin leads with 333 points to Marc Marquez's 331, with Bezzecchi sitting 49 points adrift in third as the paddock heads for the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok.
